How Can I Tell if There’s a Drafting Issue With My Fireplace & Chimney?
A drafting issue with your chimney means that smoke or gases aren’t effectively exiting your home through the chimney, which can cause smoke to linger indoors or lead to poor air quality. Here are some ways to tell if you have a drafting issue:
- Smoke is entering your living space. When you go to light a fire, if you notice smoke coming back into the room instead of going up the chimney, it’s a clear sign of a draft or airflow problem.
- You’re noticing lingering smells and staining. A persistent smoky smell or any visible soot stains on the walls or ceiling around the fireplace are both clear signs of draft problem – you might even notice odors when the fireplace isn’t in use.
- You have difficulty starting and maintaining a fire. Insufficient airflow can prevent the fire from drawing oxygen effectively, causing it to smolder. Likewise, too much air can harm your fire’s productivity, as well.
- There are cold drafts coming from your chimney. If you feel a noticeable cold draft around the fireplace when it’s not in use, a number of issues could be occurring – like improper chimney height, pressure issues, or external conditions.
The sooner we can address the root cause of your draft problems, the better. For some, this may mean completing a chimney sweeping. For others, the size of their chimney may need to be adjusted. And other times we’ll simply need to look into other solutions.
Remember that we also sell Fireplace EnergySaver which can help reduce drafts in those notoriously drafty traditional fireplace setups. Simply have one of these screens installed over the firebox opening, and enjoy a more comfortable living space when your fireplace isn’t in use.
